about

An Introduction to Finest Kind

WHILE it may sound to you like overarching excessively hyperbolic, exaggerated stretching, I believe FINEST KIND to be the best vocal trio in North America. This is a safer bit of pompous prolixity than it sounds. The combination of Downey, Robb, and Posen is a grand, synergistic union that produces perfectly blending, constantly shifting harmonies.

Whether they are singing American cowboy songs, Irish comic songs. Canadian Ottawa Valley finds, choice old sentimental winners, North Carolina gospel gems, early Country Music rarities, or Utah Phillips and Peter Bellamy originals, they seem to hit just the right tone and just the right tones. Their ornate, majestic renderings of English traditional songs are downright thrilling.

Of course, there's more to it than that. FINEST KIND'S particular domain is songs that have passed from generation to generation and singer to singer, that, like collection plates, are richer with each new hand. You quickly realize, listening to this album, that whenever this bunch take their turn to contribute, they not only add a few dollars but burnish the plate. This is what folk music should be about.

Lost in a Song is FINEST KIND'S first album. Safe to say, I'm sure, more to come...
